Instructors
& Administrators
The
popular “MATH WONDERS” and “MATH MATTERS” courses feature
Mr. Nick Diaz, a veteran to teaching with over 30 years of
professional service to Frederick County Public Schools. As a
winning Mathematics competition coach from 1986-2003, Mr. Diaz
brings a wealth of practical math knowledge to the table,
including an arsenal of math tricks and comprehension
techniques that he is known for. CAN MATH BE FUN? His students
say YES!
Mrs.
In-May Liu
obtained her BS degree in Agricultural Chemistry in Taiwan and
MS degree in Food Science and Nutrition from Colorado State
University. Her primary career has been to nurture her three
daughters with their God-given talents. Her professional path
covers being a nutrition consultant, Chinese cooking
instructor, and now, a Chinese Tea connoisseur. Besides
giving demonstrations in Chinese tea service, Mrs. Liu
volunteers at "LIFE and Discovery", an education entity
located in Frederick MD as its cultural program advisor and at
her college alumni association as arts/music coordinator. Her
current plan is to further develop the art of Chinese tea
appreciation through seminars, demonstration, and leading
groups traveling to Far East to learn about Asian cultures

Yiling Deng
Mackay,
B.S., M.A. grew up in Sichuan, China. She has practiced since early age and earned several awards on Chinese Calligraphy.
She enjoys teaching traditional Chinese Calligraphy combining
with other forms of art.
Many
of the adult and children’s technology courses offered at LIFE
& Discovery are taught by
Van Lavoy Jacobs Jr.,
owner of Hiveworx Services, a local technology and marketing
support company. As the former Technical Resource Director for
a national IT education services corporation, Van brings a
wealth of classical and practical knowledge in a wide range of
technological topics to all of his courses. He specializes in
incorporating critical “hands-on” training principles to his
classroom, and has the flexibility of teaching skill to reach
learners of all ages and knowledge bases.
Qiang
Wang
was a middle school Chinese language
teacher for seven years in china. This experience
brought her a wealth of teaching knowledge and skills in her
language and literature. Also, she believes teaching is an
interesting experience to learn from students. After she
came to the United States, she decided to learn and grow up
with her precious daughter therefore she started working at
a child development center. She is passionate about teaching
Chinese and sharing her culture with anyone who wants to
know about it, so she has been working as a Chinese program
instructor of LIFE & Discovery for three years.
Simao
Drew has a
Master's of English,
Master's of Arts in Teaching (Salisbury University, Towson
University). Taught for four years in Washington County;
last five years in Carroll County at Liberty High School.
Courses include AP Literature/Composition and Shakespeare.
Advisor, National Honor Society. Creative Writing teacher
MSDE Gifted and Talented Summer Centers at Washington
College and at Fairview Outdoor School. Adjunct English
professor at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, West
Virginia. Experienced traveler (Europe, North Africa,
American Southwest).
Nancy Kachursky is an educational consultant in Frederick,
MD. She has lived in Frederick for 3 years. Mrs. Kachursky
has a Bachelor’s degree from Kean University in New Jersey, as
well as a collateral degree in Developmental Disabilities.
Mrs. Kachursky is certified to teach Special Education and
Elementary Education, and is a Nursery Group Teacher. Mrs.
Kachursky has taught English, Algebra, and History at the high
school level as well. She now works with students in need of
remediation or enrichment, and specializes in basic skills
testing and critical thinking skills which can be applied to
any subject. She has worked with all levels of learners,
including those considered “gifted”, students with ADD, and
others.
Mrs. Cynthia Bentley Rubio
is a BSN graduate of the
Capital University School of Nursing located in Columbus, Ohio
and is currently completing her Masters degree in community
health. Cynthia has 20 years of nursing experience in
maternal child health, community health and prevention
programs. She will be offering a wide variety of community
health courses and seminars through LIFE & Discovery.

www.washingtoncenterforlearning.org - The
Washington Center for Learning (WCL)
has partnered with L&D in order to bring the most
progressive and innovative instructional strategies to
children in the Frederick area. WCL specializes in teaching
mathematics, reading, and writing to regular students as well
as those who have learning disabilities such as ADHD and
Dyslexia. The partnership brings summer programs, classes and
consulting services to local children, their families,
teachers, and the local school system. WCL is proud to
collaborate with L&D as initiatives such as this one enhance
the quality of education that children nationwide receive.
http://www.actagainstviolence.org - ACT—Adults and
Children Together—Against Violence is a violence prevention
project that focuses on adults who raise, care for, and teach
children ages 0 to 8 years. It is designed to prevent violence
by providing young children with positive role models and
environments that teach nonviolent problem-solving. The
project includes a national media campaign and training for
community professionals.
